Why is Chiropractic a Part of the FOCUS Program?

Why is chiropractic a part of the FOCUS program for kids with neurodevelopmental disorders?
This is a question I get almost daily as more and more people are learning about the FOCUS program.  The first point I want people to understand is that the FOCUS program is an innovative and integrative approach for kids and adults with challenges such as Autism, learning and behavioral disorders and ADD/ADHD.  The program is comprised of three main pillars and all are equally important.

Phase one of the program is targeted toward healing the brain and body and getting the individual in a place physically where change (specifically in the brain) is possible. Neuro-Structural chiropractic is one of the the pillars because it is a tool used to bring balance back to the brain and nervous system.   The primary objective of the gentle and specific corrective techniques to the spinal column and cranium is to move a child out of the “fight of flight” zone and into a more balanced and healthy neurological state.

In this phase we also utilize specific dietary changes, food intolerance testing and gut healing protocols to improve health in the gastrointestinal system and therefore help heal the brain.  It is because of the effectiveness of the specific Neuro-Structural correction that this type of chiropractic has been a part of the FOCUS program from the beginning and is part of the first phase of healing for individuals with learning, behavioral or developmental challenges.

Why Would a Child Need Chiropractic Care?

If you have visited Spoelstra Family Chiropractic or FOCUS, you may have noticed there are a LOT of kids!  While most people who come to our office for a consultation have been referred by a current practice member and know what to expect, occasionally someone may find us in a different way and may be surprised to see so many kids!  Because of that every once in awhile I get the question “why are you checking kids doc?”

Well, it’s simple . First of all, I LOVE kids!  I LOVE helping them achieve the best, healthiest and  fullest life possible!  Because of that I have done extensive post doctorate training in pediatric chiropractic care.  From cranial adjusting, the Webster technique for pregnant mothers, specific nutritional protocols to help heal the gastrointestinal system to Neuro-Deflective retraining for children, I’m always learning and bringing that to my practice.

It is also my passion in practice to work with children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and I have created a specific program and training system to do just that.  This program is called FOCUS and its purpose is to help improve the expression of life for kids and adults who struggle with behavioral, learning or developmental challenges. For more information on the program visit the FOCUS website or attend free community  lecture or webinar.

It is important to help adults heal from their health challenges and symptoms by identifying and correcting the primary cause.  It is equally, if not more important to assist our children in their healing and optimize their health. This is why Spoelstra Family Chiropractic and FOCUS is happy to have an office filled with kids!

Chiropractic Care for Kids

Kids and Chiropractic

Chiropractic has a simple philosophy that can save your life and make you a happier, healthier person. Many people do not understand the purpose of chiropractic and how it can benefit even the youngest of patients. That’s right; kids can derive great benefit from chiropractic care for the same reasons that adults see such amazing changes to their health. The truth of the matter is that chiropractic care is a tool to help your body do what it already does every day; keep your body healthy and functioning properly.

Chiropractic care helps restore nervous system function by seeking out subluxations in your spine. As you may already know, your spine is made up of 24 bones that house your spinal cord. You spinal cord is the bridge form your brain to the rest of the nerves that run to every cell, tissue, and organ in your body. A subluxation happens when one of your 24 spinal bones move out of place due to such things as stress, trauma, or physical exertion.

A subluxation is a serious issue that results in pressure being placed of the nerves that exit between the bones of your spine. It may not be painful or even noticeable, but it can create long term problems and cause degeneration within the bones of the spine. If you let it go long enough, the subluxation may lead to great pain as the bones in your spine are not properly aligned and will eventually create more serious health issues.

Imagine a garden hose. If you have a garden hose hooked up to a sprinkler in your yard, what happens if you go and stand on that hose? You will find that the water pressure decreases due to the interference within the hose and the sprinkler will not be spraying as much water as it was before you stood on the hose. When you step off, the flow of water is restored without restriction and the sprinkler is once again operating at its full potential.

This same phenomenon may be happening within your nervous system as you read this article. You may not be able to feel it, but a subluxation could be placing pressure on the nerves exiting your spinal cord right now and decreasing the flow of important messages making their way to your body. As you probably already know, you cannot live if your brain cannot transmit messages to your body through the nervous system. What happens, however, when restrictions from a subluxation decrease the messages?

The answer to that question is the basis of chiropractic care. As we know, subluxations can lead to a laundry list of health problems. Your body needs to be able to communicate with your brain in order to function properly. Subluxations can occur at any age and for a wide variety of reasons. Without being analyzed and adjusted by a chiropractor, these subluxations can have drastic effects on your health.

For this reason, it is important that subluxations are eliminated before they have a chance to do damage. We all have a spine, and these problems can begin from birth. While children are more resilient to these issues then adults, they are not resistant to them entirely. Eliminating subluxations in the spine before they have a chance to cause degeneration will allow a child to stop a potential problem before it starts. Most adults seek chiropractic care only after a problem becomes noticeable. At that point in time the damage has already occurred and we must play catch-up to restore proper nervous system function. For that reason, it makes sense to eliminate subluxations immediately, starting from childhood. And remember, chiropractic care is a tool to help your body stay healthy and functioning at its full potential. There is no age restriction on subluxations and the best defense is a good offense.
